Choosing the Right Filtration System for Your Pool
A clean and well-maintained pool starts with an efficient filtration system. There are three main types of swimming pool filters: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE). Each type has its own advantages and is suited for different pool applications depending on factors like usage, debris load, and water clarity. Understanding how these filters work and their pros and cons can help you decide which one is best for your pool.
Sand Filters: These are the most common and usually the most budget-friendly filters, using fine silica sand to trap debris as water passes through. They require backwashing to flush out trapped particles and generally last 6-8 years before needing a sand replacement, depending on use and application. While sand filters are durable and easy to maintain, they provide the lowest level of filtration (down to 20-30 microns), meaning finer particles may still circulate back into the pool. This makes them ideal for pools with high usage, such as public or commercial pools, where flow rates and circulation is vital. Commercial pool filters usually work around the clock, so although the tiny particles may not get caught in the first pass, they will eventually get caught as the bed of sand is lined with more and more fine debris. Once the pressure rises 5-10 psi from its starting point, it’s time to backwash! Sand filters can also be filled with glass media instead of #20 silica sand. Glass media provides superior filtration (3-10 microns) and longer life between media changes. This is a great option for most medium to high use pools.

Cartridge Filters: These filters use pleated cartridges to capture particles as small as 10-15 microns. They are more efficient than sand filters, require less frequent maintenance (no backwashing), and use less water. They also have higher flow rates when the cartridges are clean. However, they need periodic cleaning (every 4-6 months) and cartridge replacement every few years, depending on usage. Cartridge filters are excellent for residential pools with moderate to high debris loads, as they offer better water clarity while still being relatively low maintenance.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters: The most effective option if you want superior clarity, DE filters use a fine powder made from fossilized algae to trap particles as small as 2-5 microns against a cloth-like grid. This provides the best water clarity, making DE filters ideal for pools where pristine water quality is a priority. However, they require regular maintenance, backwashing, and recharging with DE powder after each backwash. They are best suited for luxury pools, or pools requiring superior filtration, but they come at a higher cost and maintenance level.

In summary, sand filters are great for high-use pools that require less maintenance, cartridge filters work well for residential pools with moderate debris and proved better clarity, and DE filters are best for those seeking the highest level of water clarity.
